Hormetic Stress as a way to health

This is the good type of stress. The ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ type of stress. This is the type of stress that makes you live longer.

When we expose ourselves to this type of stress for the right amount of time, our body activates defences that protect us from damage. The effects of this continue after the stress is removed so we become stronger as the body recovers and adapts.


We live in a time of soft seats, 24/7 air conditioning, warm jackets, safe comfortable transport and plentiful food. The uncomfortable and stressful situations that humans adapted to over the past 100,000 years have mostly disappeared in the last 50 years. As a result people have grown less softer – missing out on the many physical health benefits of hormesis. Exposing yourself to hormetic stress is a way to strengthen the body and activate powerful systems that will keep you young and healthy.

The big four hormetic stressors are:

  1. Heat therapy (Sauna)
  2. Exercise
  3. Fasting
  4. Cold Stress (Ice baths and cryotherapy)
