I like to be able to recommend books to students so I always try to read the ones that look most interesting. I had heard of Peter Brown and have seen some of his picture books but only discovered his debut novel recently.
‘The Wild Robot’ is a story of Roz, a robot who finds herself alone on an island after a hurricane sinks the ship she was on.
The novel take us through Roz’s adventures on the island and explores the question of how an intelligent robot would survive, adapt and build a meaningful life on a remote island filled with wild animals.
I really liked the book. It’s a funny, heart-warming story with great illustrations (wish they were colour!) Suitable for upper primary readers and particularly good for non-native speakers – as it’s strong on narrative but not too heavy on vocabulary. Just ordered the sequel, ‘The Wild Robot Escapes.’ Recommended reading!
